SuOn Students Shine Again in the 2025 University of Waterloo International Chemistry Competitions!
In the recently concluded 2025 University of Waterloo International Chemistry Competitions, SuOn Academy students once again demonstrated their exceptional talent! Competing in both the Avogadro and Chem 13 contests, SuOn students from multiple locations joined forces and achieved outstanding results. Many earned high-score distinctions, and two students even achieved perfect scores—ranking first in the world!
What Are the Waterloo Chemistry Competitions?

Hosted by the University of Waterloo, one of Canada’s top institutions, the chemistry competitions are internationally recognized and attract high school students from across the globe each year. They are known as a gold standard for assessing high school students’ chemistry skills worldwide.
Avogadro Exam: Designed for students in Grade 11 and below, it tests fundamental knowledge and the ability to apply concepts in chemistry.
Chem 13 Exam: Tailored for Grade 12 students and below, it emphasizes analytical skills and logical reasoning—serving as a stepping stone to advanced chemical studies.
1.International Prestige
These competitions are organized by a top-tier Canadian university and are highly recognized by leading institutions in North America, the UK, Australia, and beyond.
2.A Competitive Edge in University Applications
√ High achievers in these contests demonstrate outstanding STEM capabilities, which are especially advantageous for applications to programs in chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering.
√ In addition, the University of Waterloo announced a new incentive this year: students who participate in the 2025 Chem 13 contest and enroll in Waterloo’s Faculty of Science in their first year may be eligible for a CAD 1,000 scholarship.
3.Developing Thinking and Academic Depth
Compared to standard school curricula, the contest questions are more challenging and emphasize knowledge transfer and critical thinking. They help students build deeper understanding and scientific reasoning.
SuOn Academy’s 2025 Results Overview
√Chem 13 Contest (Grade 12 and below): 113 students participated from SuOn Academy; 88% award rate; 5 students achieved perfect scores, ranking #1 globally out of 1,962 participants
√Avogadro Contest (Grade 11 and below): 126 students participated; 86% award rate; Ma Cathy and Chen Darren both achieved perfect scores, ranking #1 in the world out of 4,981 participants
