Ranked Third in Canada! Two SuOn Academy Students Nearly Achieve Perfect Scores in the AMC American Mathematics Competition!
In the November 2024 AMC 10/12 (American Mathematics Competition), two students from SuOn Academy achieved outstanding results. Ziqin Huang scored an impressive 141 points in the AMC 12B, while Bingru Zhao scored 145.5 points in the AMC 12B, ranking third in Canada. Both students placed in the top 1% globally. Notably, Bingru Zhao scored 12 points on the AIME II, bringing her total score to 265.5, surpassing the 2024 USAMO qualification cutoff by approximately 40 points.
AMC/AIME: A Competitive Edge for U.S. University Applications
AMC and AIME competition results are highly persuasive and competitive indicators for U.S. university applications, particularly in fields such as mathematics and engineering. The AMC 12 is an advanced mathematics competition designed for students in Grade 12 and below, attracting participants worldwide. With its high difficulty level and rigorous requirements, achieving a top 1% global score is an exceptional accomplishment.

How did Ziqin Huang and Bingru Zhao achieve such remarkable results? What study strategies can they share? What are their future plans? We interviewed both students to learn more.
Ziqin Huang
Ziqin Huang has been passionate about mathematics since childhood and frequently explores math-related books, such as Elementary Mathematics from an Advanced Standpoint, Lie Groups and Lie Algebras, and the Excursion through Elementary Mathematics series.
Regarding the AMC 12, Ziqin emphasized that the questions require deep analytical thinking to find the correct approach. He stated:
“The AMC 12 problems are very different from typical school math exercises. Many questions require creative problem-solving and unconventional thinking. To prepare effectively, I focused on practicing extensively and familiarizing myself with different question types to develop problem-solving strategies.”
Ziqin also highlighted the IVY+ program, led by Mr. Chen, as a crucial factor in his success. Mr. Chen, an expert in mathematics competitions, provided structured guidance, problem analysis, and strategic insights.
“Mr. Chen introduced us to challenging problems that rarely appear in standard coursework but are highly likely to be tested in competitions. His explanations significantly enhanced my preparation and problem-solving skills.”
For the future, Ziqin plans to apply to Ivy League universities in the U.S. and the University of Oxford, pursuing studies in mathematics or computer science. He will also participate in a research project led by Professor Li, a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Sciences, under the guidance of Mr. Chen this summer to strengthen his academic background.
Bingru Zhao
Bingru Zhao shares a deep passion for mathematics. In her first semester of Grade 12, she excelled in her OSSD 4U courses, achieving two scores of 99 and two perfect 100s, securing the top position at SuOn Academy. Beyond school coursework, she regularly explores university-level mathematics, including calculus and linear algebra, through online resources.
Regarding the AMC 12, Bingru highlighted the challenges of geometry problems, stating:
“The geometry questions in the AMC 12 are particularly difficult. Many require auxiliary lines or geometric constructions to identify the solution path. To improve, I focused on extensive practice in geometry to enhance my spatial reasoning skills.”
Like Ziqin, Bingru also participated in the IVY+ program, where Mr. Chen’s coaching played a pivotal role in her preparation.
“Mr. Chen’s guidance helped me tackle the toughest competition problems. Many questions require specialized techniques and problem-solving strategies, and his explanations deepened my understanding and refined my approach.”
Key Takeaways: Passion, Persistence, and Expert Guidance
The remarkable success of Ziqin Huang and Bingru Zhao in the AMC competition is a testament to their passion for mathematics, years of dedicated effort, and expert mentorship. Their achievements demonstrate that genuine interest is the best motivator and that hard work is the foundation of success. As the university application season approaches, they are well on their way to securing offers from top Ivy League universities and pursuing their academic dreams.
