SuOn Academy Surpasses University of Toronto Schools in Euclid Contest Ranking

 In English News

In the April 2024 Euclid Mathematics Contest, SuOn Academy achieved an outstanding rank of 23rd among all participating high schools across Canada. This remarkable achievement not only places SuOn second among high schools in the Greater Toronto Area but also surpasses the University of Toronto Schools (UTS), renowned for its strength in STEM education, which ranked 28th globally. This notable success showcases SuOn Academy’s profound capabilities in mathematics and underscores its excellence in STEM education.

UTS’s Exceptional STEM Strength

The University of Toronto Schools (UTS) is often regarded as a pinnacle of secondary education, especially when associated with a prestigious university like the University of Toronto, ranked among the top 20 in the world by US News. Founded in 1910, UTS is one of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious private schools. It boasts an illustrious reputation for its academic excellence and distinguished faculty, contributing to its esteemed position in the Canadian education landscape.

UTS has nurtured numerous outstanding alumni, including Nobel laureates, renowned scientists, and leaders in various fields. The school maintains a highly selective admissions process, drawing a large number of exceptional students each year. Its rigorous standards encompass not only academic performance but also leadership, innovation, and community service. Until 2023, UTS admitted only local Canadian students.

STEM, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, was promoted by former US President Barack Obama to enhance students’ abilities in these fields. The concept has since gained global traction. UTS is renowned for its exceptional STEM education, equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, a rich array of STEM courses, and top-notch faculty. The school attracts the brightest minds from Toronto and across Canada, who excel in various academic competitions, particularly in STEM subjects, further solidifying UTS’s leading position in STEM education.

SuOn Academy Surpasses UTS

However, in this year’s Euclid Mathematics Contest, SuOn Academy outperformed UTS, ranking 23rd nationwide, highlighting SuOn’s STEM prowess. In recent years, SuOn has invested significantly in STEM education, continuously improving the quality of education and students’ competitive abilities. This achievement not only affirms the school’s teaching outcomes but also demonstrates SuOn Academy’s strong competitiveness in STEM education.

SuOn Academy has consistently excelled in STEM competitions over the past few years. For instance, in 2023, it won the regional championship in the CSMC Math Contest, the regional championship in the 2022 Euclid Math Contest, and the regional championship in the 2024 Fermat Math Contest. SuOn students have also achieved remarkable results in various other competitions, such as 18th place nationwide in the CSMC Math Contest, 16th place in the Cayley Math Contest, 3rd place in the Avogadro Chemistry Contest, 8th place in the University of Toronto OAPT High School Physics Contest, and a 100% award rate in the 2021 CCC Computer Contest. These impressive results further prove SuOn Academy’s strength and competitive level in STEM education.

The Secret to Success

Behind SuOn Academy’s outstanding performance in mathematics competitions is the school’s relentless pursuit of high-quality STEM education. The school places great emphasis on cultivating students’ STEM abilities, providing various support mechanisms. For example, Dr. Amani, a mathematics PhD, offers daily after-school tutoring, and certified AP coaches from the US provide competition coaching. These initiatives continuously enhance students’ mathematical skills and competition levels, nurturing a group of exceptional math competition talents. Besides focusing on top-performing students, SuOn also provides support for those with average STEM foundations. Starting this fall, SuOn will offer free after-school STEM tutoring for students needing extra help.

This success in the Euclid Mathematics Contest is the result of SuOn Academy’s sustained investment in STEM education over the years. Looking ahead, we will continue our efforts to provide students with superior educational resources and broader development platforms, aiming to achieve even more outstanding results in various academic competitions.

Euclid – A Premier Canadian Academic Competition

Why is the Euclid Mathematics Contest considered a benchmark for a school’s STEM level?

The Euclid Mathematics Contest, organized by the renowned Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, is a global mathematics competition primarily for 12th-grade students. It is the most challenging of Waterloo’s numerous math contests. Most of the questions are based on the final year of Canadian high school math, with some content even exceeding high school math knowledge. Today, Euclid scores are a crucial admission criterion for the University of Waterloo’s math-related programs and software engineering, as well as a key condition for scholarships. The contest covers topics like algebra (functions, trigonometry, permutations, combinations), plane geometry, and analytic geometry. Due to the University of Waterloo’s prestigious reputation in mathematics and the contest’s rigorous and professional standards, Euclid scores are widely recognized by Canadian universities.

This year, 14 SuOn Academy students won awards in the Euclid Mathematics Contest, with Junbao Gao, Alex Li, and Ziqin Huang achieving top scores. The award list is as follows:

Junbao Gao, Alex Li
Ziqin Huang, Yucheng Ye
Xiyan Wang, Sixuan Song
Zeyang Chen, Ting Cui
Shiyuan Lü, Yeru Zhang
Shaoyi Xu, Jiawen Sun
Jinchao Zhou, Yuhao Cao
