Mathematics Competition Rankings Announced: SuOn Academy Surpasses Many “Top Private Schools”!

 In English News

In April 2024, SuOn Academy achieved remarkable results in the prestigious Euclid Mathematics Contest, the most important math competition for Canadian high school students. SuOn Academy scored 264 points, earning the runner-up position among high schools in the Toronto area and ranking 23rd among the 1810 participating high schools nationwide. This not only continues SuOn’s excellent performance in past science competitions but also showcases SuOn’s strong capabilities in mathematics education.

Performance Analysis: SuOn Surpasses Many “Top Private Schools”

According to the official rankings of the top 50 schools in Canada, SuOn Academy outperformed many “top private schools.” For instance, the renowned Appleby College ranked 50th, and the University of Toronto Schools (UTS), known for its strong science program, ranked 28th. SuOn’s ranking matched that of Havergal College and was second only to Upper Canada College (UCC) among high schools in the Toronto area. Surprisingly, many well-known top private schools like BSS (Bishop Strachan School), St. Andrew’s College, and St. Michael’s University School did not make it into this list. This achievement proves SuOn’s strength in mathematics competitions, showing that we are not inferior to these top private schools in math education.

Fourteen students from SuOn Academy received awards in the Euclid Mathematics Contest. Notably, students Gao Junbao, Alex Li, and Huang Ziqin earned top scores and were honored on the contest’s honor roll. The list of award-winning students is as follows:

Gao Junbao, Alex Li
Huang Ziqin, Ye Yucheng
Wang Xiyan, Song Sixuan
Chen Zeyang, Cui Ting
Lyu Shiyuan, Zhang Yeru
Xu Shaoyi, Sun Jiawen
Zhou Jinchao, Cao Yuhao

Demystifying the “Top Private Schools”

“Top private schools” are synonymous with elite institutions due to their long histories, glorious traditions, and numerous accolades. They have always been sought after as dream schools for the children of Canada’s elite. For example, Havergal College, founded in 1894, has a 130-year history and is one of Canada’s top girls’ private schools, producing many successful alumni in business, politics, and academia. Havergal excels in academics, sports, and arts, with rigorous admission standards, especially for international students, requiring excellence in academic performance, extracurricular activities, and recommendation letters.

Similarly, Appleby College, established in 1911, has over 110 years of history. It is renowned for its exceptional teaching quality and comprehensive student development programs, producing many distinguished alumni across various fields. Appleby College has won numerous awards in academic competitions, sports events, and social services. Its admission standards are also very stringent, admitting only 20 international students annually, with just one from mainland China.

However, SuOn Academy’s recent performance in the competition demonstrates that top private schools are not invincible and can be surpassed. As a “superstar” in the Canadian secondary education sector, many top private schools’ mathematics levels and STEM competition strengths do not match SuOn’s, and even their university offer quality may not be better than SuOn’s (we will analyze this in a future article).

Review of SuOn’s STEM Competition Achievements

In addition to its outstanding performance in this year’s Euclid Mathematics Contest, SuOn Academy has also excelled in STEM competitions over the past few years. For instance, in 2023, we won the regional championship in the CSMC Math Competition, the regional championship in the 2022 Euclid Math Contest, and the regional championship in the 2024 Fermat Math Contest. SuOn students have achieved notable rankings such as 18th in Canada in the CSMC Math Competition, 16th in the Cayley Math Competition, 3rd in the Avogadro Chemistry Competition, 8th in the University of Toronto OAPT High School Physics Contest, and a 100% award rate in the 2021 CCC Computer Competition. These impressive achievements further demonstrate SuOn Academy’s strength and competition level in STEM subjects.

Secrets to Success

SuOn Academy’s excellent performance in math competitions is due to its relentless pursuit of quality STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics). We emphasize developing students’ STEM abilities and provide various support measures. For example, we offer daily after-school tutoring sessions with Dr. Amani, a mathematics Ph.D., and competition coaching by a certified AP exam coach from the United States. Through these initiatives, SuOn continuously enhances students’ math abilities and competition levels, nurturing many outstanding math competition talents. In addition to focusing on high-achieving students, SuOn also provides support for students with average STEM foundations. Starting this fall, SuOn will offer free after-school STEM tutoring for students with average STEM skills.

SuOn Academy’s success in the Euclid Mathematics Contest is a testament to its long-term commitment to STEM education. In the future, we will continue to strive to provide students with better educational resources and broader development platforms, aiming to achieve even more outstanding results in various academic competitions.

Euclid – The Premier Academic Competition in Canada

Why is the Euclid Mathematics Contest considered a benchmark for a school’s STEM level?

The Euclid Mathematics Contest, organized by the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics, is a globally recognized math competition for high school students (primarily 12th grade). It is the most challenging of the University of Waterloo’s math competitions. Most of the problems are based on the final year of Canadian high school math curriculum, with some content even exceeding high school math knowledge. Nowadays, Euclid Math Contest scores have become an important reference for admissions to the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics and Software Engineering programs, and a crucial criterion for scholarship eligibility. The contest content includes algebra (functions, trigonometry, permutations, combinations), plane geometry, and analytic geometry. Due to the University of Waterloo’s excellent reputation in mathematics and the strict and professional standards of the Euclid Math Contest, its scores are widely recognized by Canadian universities.
